vSaaS: Beyond Code, Deep in the Trenches

True vSaaS is more than just well-written code; it's about a profound understanding of the target vertical. It involves workflows and feature sets built on real-time insights into lead generation, sales cycles, vendor relationships, payment dynamics, and all the other vital components of a thriving company within that specific industry.

The Pitfalls of Disconnection

No matter how skilled the software engineering team or how advanced the tech stack, a platform will inevitably fall short if it isn't developed through an iterative process grounded in real-world, daily experience within the industry it serves.

The Power of Immersion

Our core belief is that the most effective vSaaS offerings emerge when the development team is, in essence, also a customer of the vSaaS solution. In other words, genuine, impactful software that truly addresses the needs of a particular workflow can only be deployed when we've become an active participant in that industry. As Mark Leonard, founder of Constellation Software, noted in a 2009 shareholder letter: "Our attrition rates also illustrate the long-term nature of our client relationships. Attrition due to the loss of customers in 2009 was ~4%, suggesting that our average customer will stay with Constellation for 26 years." This highlights the "stickiness" and long refresh cycles inherent in vertical SaaS.

Addressing the "Messy Inbox" Problem with AI

David Haber at Andreessen Horowitz recently discussed "The Messy Inbox Problem," highlighting a software disruption strategy that uses AI to tackle judgment-intensive workflows within a job function or industry. We encountered this very challenge at one of our portfolio companies, Levo, in the private air charter industry. The sales office was inundated with thousands of daily emails, most of which were irrelevant broker requests. The potential for revenue-generating leads existed, but identifying them required correlating fleet availability, traffic patterns, and other critical parameters. The "Messy Inbox" challenge in the private aviation charter industry can be addressed with modules applicable in other use cases. Simultaneously, providing a "wedge" solution to offer more back-office ERP-like solutions for that industry means that software modules utilized elsewhere can be adapted and layered upon the SmartInbox™ we provide.

NXT's Approach: Immersion and Modular Scalability

When NXT ventures into a new industry, our approach involves becoming a participant first (as a retailer, distributor, or operator). We develop software to empower our team in lead generation, sales processing, order fulfillment, service requests, regulatory compliance, and logistics management. NXT functions as a Private Equity Studio focused on vSaaS, where Vertical SaaS as a strategy can be scaled and applied across industries. This is achieved by creating an optimal balance between modular software applicable across verticals and customized, industry-specific platform components. The "Messy Inbox" exemplifies scaling vSaaS in a portfolio environment, where modules can be developed globally and then tailored and applied to specific vertical applications.
